What I Unlearned After 40: The Freedom That Built 'Ova 40'

I spent my twenties and thirties trying to fit. Fit the mold of what a Philly hip-hop artist was supposed to look like. Fit the timeline that said if you didn't blow up by 25, you missed your window. Fit into rooms that weren't built for women who both sing AND rap, who run businesses, who speak their minds. I was talented, I was working, but I was also exhausted from shrinking.

Then I turned 40. And something cracked open. Not in a dramatic, movie-moment way — more like a quiet exhale I'd been holding for two decades. I started asking myself: What if I stopped performing for people who were never going to get it anyway? What if I made music for the version of me that exists right now, not the version I thought the industry wanted?

That question led to 'Ova 40', my rap album. Not an R&B project — a straight-up rap album, because that's what I wanted to create. I wanted to spit about life after 40 with the same energy younger artists bring to their come-up stories. I wanted to talk about reinvention, resilience, starting over, leveling up when society tells you to slow down. I wanted to prove that 40-plus doesn't mean invisible.

Here's what I had to unlearn to get there. First: that my value was tied to being young or being what someone else decided was marketable. The music industry loves a narrow lane, and if you don't fit, they'll try to convince you that you don't matter. I unlearned that lie. Second: that asking for help or pivoting meant failure. I taught myself tech, built In Da Streets Radio from the ground up, launched a nonprofit, wrote books — all after 40. Those pivots weren't Plan B. They were growth.

Third, and this one took the longest: I unlearned the idea that I had to have it all figured out to move forward. For years I waited for perfect conditions, perfect timing, the perfect co-sign. What I learned after 40 is that clarity comes from doing, not from waiting. I built Inspire Da Streets while I was still figuring out what it could be. I recorded 'Ova 40' while juggling consulting work and radio shows and life. Perfection is a trap. Progress is the real work.

The freedom that comes with age isn't about caring less — it's about caring more precisely. I care deeply about my music, my community, mental health advocacy, empowering the next generation of independent artists. I just stopped caring about approval from people who were never going to ride for me anyway. That shift is everything.

There's a specific kind of power in being underestimated. When people write you off because of your age or your path or the fact that you do things your own way, you get to move in silence and surprise them. 'Ova 40' is my surprise. It's my statement that reinvention isn't just possible after 40 — it's when some of us hit our stride.
