No Code Degree, No Problem: How I Built My Empire with AI and You Can Too

Let me be real with you: I am not a software engineer. I never took a coding class. I didn't grow up with computers like that. But right now, I run a global independent radio station, a digital publishing company, a consulting practice, and a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. And I built all of it using AI and modern tech tools that anybody with internet access can learn.
When I started In Da Streets Radio, I had to teach myself audio editing, streaming software, website builders, and social media automation. I used tools like Canva for graphics, Streamyard for broadcasts, and WordPress to build my site. Then AI tools started showing up — ChatGPT, Jasper, Claude, MidJourney — and I learned them the same way I learned everything else: by doing it scared and Googling when I got stuck.
Women, especially women of color, get left out of the tech conversation like we don't belong there. But here's the truth: AI is the great equalizer if you're willing to learn it. I use AI to draft contracts for My Biz Consulting. I use it to edit podcast episodes, generate marketing copy, and brainstorm content ideas for Mob Mistress Chronicles. I even used it to help structure grant applications for Inspire Da Streets.
The fear is real, I get it. You think you need a degree or some special access. You don't. Most of these tools have free tiers or trials. Start with ChatGPT — ask it to teach you something you want to know. Use Notion to organize your ideas. Try Descript for editing audio or video without touching a timeline. Play with Canva's AI design assistant. Just start somewhere.
What changed for me was realizing that tech isn't some mystical thing only young Silicon Valley dudes understand. It's just tools. And tools are made to be used. I'm over 40, I'm from Philly, I'm juggling multiple businesses and my mental health, and I still learned this stuff. If I can do it, so can you.
The bigger mission here is this: women need to be building with AI, not just being replaced by it. We need to own our platforms, tell our own stories, and control our own economic futures. That's why part of Inspire Da Streets focuses on tech training for artists and young people. I want to see more of us on the creation side, not just the consumer side.
Here's my challenge to you today: pick one tool you've been curious about and spend 30 minutes learning it this week. Watch a YouTube tutorial. Sign up for the free version. Ask AI to explain it to you like you're five. Stop waiting for permission to build your thing. The tools are right there, and the world needs what you have to offer.
So yeah, I'm a woman in tech. I'm a Black woman in AI. I'm an independent artist using these tools to level the playing field and build generational wealth on my own terms. And if that's not inspiration, I don't know what is.
